CPI and RPI: why two answers
The UK has two long-running inflation measures. CPI (the Consumer Prices Index) is what the government uses to uprate the state pension and most benefits. RPI (the Retail Prices Index) is generally higher, and is still used for things like rail fare increases, interest on student loans, and some index-linked bonds. RPI runs back to 1948; CPI is a shorter series. Because they move differently, which measure is applied to you changes the number, so this calculator shows both.
The figures are the ONS published series (Consumer Price Inflation, MM23, released monthly under the Open Government Licence). We reconstruct an annual index from the published 12-month rates and convert using the ratio of annual-average index values. We do not revise or re-base the ONS figures.
